How do you make sense of a world so fragile?
And if I break will I have a place among the good and happy?
~ Aya Al-Hakim
I just discovered Aya Al-Hakim, and these two lines laid me wide open this morning as if she had read my thoughts and felt the weight of my heavy heart in her own hands. I am more hopeful than her poem reads but full of splinters all the same.
Splinters of sadness
for my friend who died without good-byes,
for a relationship broken out of the blue
by no fault of ours.
Both of us,
casualties of the sins of strangers.
Splinters. Not bullets nor blades.
Spring will not be held back by grief,
Any more than life by a grave.
~ peace & prayers,

I write a Tuesday morning devotional to members and friends of UBC. It is also posted here.
