What to expect

On your first visit and beyond...

Expect to be
WelcomeD & Affirmed

Lots of churches say everyone welcome.  Not all churches admit how hard that can be.  If you are exploring faith,  enjoy open conversation about how spirituality meets real life, are comfortable worshipping with LGBTQ+ siblings,  love thoughtful Bible study, respectful dialogue, community service and breaking bread with others,
UBC is worth checking out.
If you are exploring faith, looking for a church home, or returning after time away, we want to welcome you, to offer a resting place from the world and new strength to return again.
Worship every Sunday at 10:45am

Expect to hear A lot about Jesus.
and Kindness. And justice. And Humility.

We are Christian. The Christian gospel is the center of our life together.  The bible tells us that God's work in Jesus Christ has saved us, once and for all.  No exceptions.  Life is a gift to be lived every day in gratitude for that salvation.  It's a life ofvery few rules and a lot of Spirit.  The rules we lean on most are from Micah, chapter 6; doing justice, loving kindness and being humble.
Every person we meet is hurting, so we choose to treat them with extreme kindness.
God loves every human being equally and we mimic that love by working for justice in this world,
particularly for the poor, the marginalized, the disenfranchised.
To us, humility is simply admitting we don't have everything figured out;
about God, about church, about our own lives.
Our life together can be pretty messy. We have hurts, habits and hang-ups that are forever interrupting our good intentions. If you're looking for a place where people tell the truth about how hard it gets to deal with the messby yourself, we have a spot for you ~ A spot for you to sit and listen.  A spot for you to help and serve.
A spot to walk along with us as we discover what it means to find life in Jesus.
It may not ever be less messy but it surely is less lonely and a ton more fun
than pretending we are perfect.
We’re a community of people who know we don’t have it all together.
But day by day, as Jesus heals our brokenness we are learning to tend one another
with His gentleness and grace.  It's messy but also kind of beautiful.

You Belong.
Folks at University Baptist come from all walks of life. Many UBC'ers have an association with the Indiana University campus; students, professors, and administrators are among us. Ours is a wonderful mix of students and townspeople doing our best to follow Jesus faithfully in this time and place. We support each other in sorrow and rejoice in each other's victories.  We’re crazy about broken people and we’ll get our hands messy to serve others. Everybody belongs – every color, every shape, every personality, and people with every kind of story imaginable.
Casual.
We care about YOU, not what you’re wearing, so feel to come in jeans or whatever is comfortable. Our dress code is simple: wear something. Grab a hot cup of free coffee and a snack and sit wherever you’d like!
Nice People.
We LOVE it when someone comes for the first time. We often hear we’re one of the friendliest churches people have experienced.  Don't be afraid to say, “This is my first time” and we’ll guide you in! We will NOT single you out publicly or ask you to say anything, and we do NOT expect guests to contribute anything financially.
Kids.
WE LOVE THEM!...and kids love it at University Baptist. If you bring your kids, they will be treated to loads of personal attention and care (and cookies!). We really like all ages in worship so all children are welcome to join us in the sanctuary during the worship service. For those who prefer, we have a supervised nursery for kids ages two and younger.  For children who do remain upstairs, coloring and writing materials are available in the foyer.  All children are invited forward to participate in the children’s sermon.
